PM Wong congratulates Bangladesh’s Muhammad Yunus on taking charge of interim government

SINGAPORE: Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong has written to Muhammad Yunus to congratulate him on his appointment as chief adviser of Bangladesh, said the Ministry of Foreign Affairs on Thursday (Aug 15).
Nobel Peace Prize winner Yunus was sworn into office to lead the interim government after a student-led uprising ended the 15-year rule of Sheikh Hasina.
“I would like to congratulate you and extend my best wishes on your appointment as the Chief Adviser of the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh,” Mr Wong said in his congratulatory letter.
“In this period of transition, your interim government has resolutely undertaken the crucial task of restoring stability.
“I am confident that under your leadership, Bangladesh will return to a path of peace and prosperity, where all communities co-exist harmoniously. I wish you and the government every success.”
Mr Wong also noted the “warm and longstanding friendship” between Singapore and Bangladesh.
The countries cooperate in a wide range of sectors, including trade and investment, labour, renewable energy, infrastructure, and port management, Mr Wong said.
“I look forward to working with you to further strengthen the close ties between our countries.”
